5 injured as police, protesters clash outside PM's residence

Mar 24, 2016- Five people were injured rights activitsts clashed with police personnel outside the Prime Minister's residence in Baluwatar, Kathmandu on Thursday. Police rounded up demonstrators during the clash.

Rights activists and conflict victims, on the International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims, were staging protest outside the PM's residence with placards demanding the truth of what happened to their relatives during the decade long insurgency.

Rights activist Charan Prasai, Ram Bhandari, Kamala Rai, Lenin Bista among others have been detained, while at least five persons have been injured in a clash with police. Police also snatched iPad from bystander who was taking pictures of the demonstration.

DSP Lokendra Shrestha said the detainees will be released after the demonstration is over. "We have detained some protesters who tried to obstruct vehicular movement. We will release them after demonstrators leave the protest site," said Shrestha.

However, the demonstrators said they would not leave the protest site unless the detained are released. "This is not even a prohibited zone. We want our friends released first, " said Gyanendra Aran, a member of Conflict Victims Common Platform, an alliance of 13 organizations of conflict victims that organised today's demonstration.
