Road accident in nepal ( everyday five people killed and thirty three Injured)

Posted by Anup Baral January 31, 2016:
Road accidents in Nepal have killed as many people or even more than the figure claimed by the 10 years of armed conflict. One study reveals that they have taken the lives of about 5,000 people in just five years since the year 2000. Therefore, on average, road accidents claim three lives everyday, 83 lives every month and 1,000 lives every year. Unfortunately, many road accidents are not reported or recorded. Accidents only with significant property damage, serious injury or those leading to disputes and conflict are recorded. On the other hand, if an adult is killed in a road accident, then it will likely bring financial crisis to the family, which has to cope with a severe loss to their livelihood. Other consequences that may follow can be the drop-out of the victim's children from school and, of course, loss of a key role model in their lives. In this connection, it is worth mentioning that the majority of lives claimed by road accidents are of people aged between 15-40 years. This means, the country is losing potentially the most productive people to road accidents.Arun Karki man

More than 2,100 pregnant Colombian women infected with Zika virus

BOGOTA: More than 2,100 pregnant Colombian women are infected with the mosquito-borne Zika virus, the country’s national health institute said on Saturday, as the disease continues its spread across the Americas.

The virus has been linked to the devastating birth defect microcephaly, which prevents fetus’ brains from developing properly. There is no vaccine or treatment

There are 20,297 confirmed cases of the disease in Colombia, the national health institute said in a epidemiology bulletin, among them 2,116 pregnant women.

There are so far no reported cases of microcephaly or deaths from the virus in Colombia.

The institute said 37.2 percent of pregnant women with Zika live in Norte de Santander province, along the eastern border with Venezuela.

Earlier figures from the health ministry showed 560 pregnant women had the disease, out of more than 13,500 infections.

Zika cases have been confirmed in 23 countries and territories in the Americas and scientists are racing to develop a vaccine for the virus.

Nearly half of Colombia’s Zika cases have been reported in the country’s Caribbean region, the bulletin said. More than 60 percent of those infected are women.

The health ministry has said Zika infection falls within the health requirements women must meet to get abortions in the country, which restricts the procedure unless patients are victims of rape, have significant medical problems or the fetus is fatally deformed.

Many women, especially those living far from large cities, struggle to find abortion providers even when they meet the legal requirements and illegal abortions are widespread.

The government has urged women to delay pregnancy for six to eight months to avoid potential infection. Officials expect up to 700,000 cases.

Brazil is the country hit hardest by the disease. It has reported around 3,700 cases of microcephaly strongly suspected to be related to Zika.

The World Health Organization has said as many as 4 million people in the Americas may become infected.

Nepali Cricket ICC U19 World Cup Quarter Final Ma

Ever since they shocked New Zealand in the opening match of the cricket Under-19 World Cup at Fatullah on Thursday, the Nepalese team has been flooded with congratulatory phone calls. “Calls are coming from everywhere. Even the Prime Minister (K P Sharma Oli) called, wishing us luck for tomorrow’s match,” says Aarif Sheikh, the team’s soft-spoken vice-captain. On Saturday, Nepal play Ireland, a team they have dominated lately. And if they pull off another victory, they will all but advance to the quarterfinals, which would be their best performance since they lifted the Plate (second tier) trophy in 2006.
That, for Nepal, would complete a story of triumph after twin disasters — one natural, the other man-made. Among the worst-hit by the earthquake last April was Nepal’s main cricketing facility, Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground. “The new indoor nets facility was destroyed,” says Sheikh, adding that the senior team had to go to Dharamsala in June to prepare for the World T20 qualifiers. Soon, the country faced another setback — an economic blockade that stopped the flow of essential goods, including fuel, from India following protests over Nepal’s new constitution by the Madhesis. “Diesel was selling at 450-500 rupees a litre (roughly Rs 300). Even at that price, it was hard to procure,” says a source in the Nepalese cricket board, who did not wish to be named. The cascading effect on life took a toll on cricket as well. “We had a bowling machine, but couldn’t use it since it needed diesel to run,” he says. And, it became hard to procure basic equipment, even cricket balls, he adds. “A single practice session required a lot of cricket balls, and we were running out. Those available in the markets came at a very high price. So whenever any Nepal cricket official would visit Delhi, he would bring back a box full of balls. That’s how we managed,” says the source.

Bomb scare forces Kathmandu-bound flights to ground in Delhi

Bomb scare forces Kathmandu-bound flights to ground in Delhi

NEW DELHI: Two flights, one each of Air India and Jet Airways, were grounded today just before their departure for Kathmandu from here following a bomb scare.

Airport sources said that the two flights were halted after the Jet Airways security office at Indira Gandhi International Airport here received an anonymous call saying there was a “bomb threat” to Air India flight AI-215 and Jet Airways flight 9W 260.

The two flights were scheduled to take off for the Nepali capital at 0115 hour and 0130 hours, respectively.

This is the second such incident of grounding of an aircraft due to a bomb scare as on Saturday the same flight of Jet Airways was delayed by six hours due to the grounding of the plane after a bomb threat call, which turned out to be a hoax.

While 121 passengers were booked on the Air India flight, Jet Airways said it had 122 passengers and seven crew on board its flight 9W 260.

The two aircraft have been taken to the isolation bay, where security personnel from Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) are carrying out an extensive search of the baggage and check-in luggage of the passengers, the sources said.

“Jet Airways flight 9W 260, scheduled to depart from Delhi for Kathmandu at 1325 hrs, has been delayed due to a security alert. All 122 guests and 7 crew have been taken to the departures waiting area at the airport,” Jet Airways said in a statement.

National carrier Air India also said that the flight has been delayed due the same reason.

PM Oli says he will not visit India until border restrictions are eased

Jan 26, 2016- Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that the blockade will be lifted in a few days and that his upcoming visit to India will not take place before border restrictions are eased.

Speaking to a select group of journalists in Baluwatar, two days after the passage of the first amendment to the constitution—in an effort to address concerns of Madhesi parties, Oli expressed hope that crisis caused by the border restrictions will end soon.

“This is undeclared blockade and will open unofficially. All border points obstructions will ease within two or three days,” said Oli on Tuesday. “I will not go to India until the border reopens.”

PM Oli said that the issue of federal structure can be revisited through a commission. “Constitution has made provision for a federal commission if the federal state delimitation is not satisfactory,” said Oli.

PM also insisted that the disgruntled Madhes-centric parties have been satisfied by the constitution amendment. “They, however, are unwilling to accept it openly. Because they fear that their agenda could be hijacked by other groups.”

He also commented that his vision to develop the country was mocked at. “I have been established as a laughing material when I declared my ambitious plans,” said PM Oli.

Forum Nepal to intensify Kathmandu-centric protest

Jan 24, 2016- Sanghiya Samajwadi Forum Nepal, a key constituent party of the agitating Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha, has decided to intensify Kathmandu-centric protest programmes while strengthening the ongoing border blockade at the same time.
The party Chairman Upendra Yadav said that agitating Madhesi Morcha will enlarge its alliance by grouping with the sides involved in identity-based politics to further intensify the protest.
The party’s central working committee meeting held here in the Capital has concluded that the government is apathetic to Madhesi demands and hence there is no alternative to a ‘decisive protest’.
Chairman Yadav said they were compelleled to resort to a 'decisive protest' as the government did not show seriousness to address the demands of Madhes-based parties despite utmost flexibility on the latter's part.
“Government has amended the constitution unilaterally and forcefully, just like it promulgated the constitution,” said Chairman Yadav after the CWC meet. “The amendments do not address Madhes agitation.”
