Medicines worth around Rs 10 million have been going to waste in the district each year due to the ineffective supervision of the concerned agency and trend among doctors of prescribing medicines other than the ones provided free by the government.
According to the District Public Health Office (DPHO), Nawalparasi, only 40 percent of the free medicines distributed by the government has been used, with the rest being destroyed.
“The concerned agency does not send medicines according to the patients’ requirements,” said Baburam Timilsena, in charge of the health post at Tilakpur. “It rather sends unwanted medicines or those on the verge of getting expired.”
