Vanuatu tsunami threat over after big earthquake hits islands

A major earthquake hit the Pacific nation of Vanuatu early on Friday, briefly prompting a tsunami warning that was cancelled after locals reported no significant damage.

The United States Geological Survey said the 7.0-magnitude quake - originally reported as 7.3 - struck at a relatively shallow depth of 35 kilometres (21 miles) some 209 kilometres from the capital Port Vila.

The National Tsunami Warning Center (NTWC) initially warned the quake, which hit at 1933 Thursday GMT, could generate waves of up to three metres (10 feet) on parts of the Vanuatu coast.

Within two hours it had cancelled the alert, saying "there is no longer a tsunami threat from this earthquake".

Port Vila journalist Moses Stevens said he was not aware of any damage in the capital, while tourist resort manager Dave Cross said it was felt strongly on the island of Espiritu Santo.

"We really felt the shake because it was so shallow, but all we lost was a vase and some flowers," he told AFP.

"I'm told there was a small wave, but that was the extent of it."

He added: "Earthquakes are just part of life here."

Dadeldhura fire under control

The massive inferno which threatened to ravage Bagbazaar downtown of Dadeldhura has been taken under control after two hours.

The fire which started at 6:00 am completely burned down a grocery shop and Baijanath Wool Industry, and inflicted losses on a dozen more shops. The damage estimate is yet to arrive.

The Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police personnel reached the incident site in time but could not control the fire due to lack of tools. The only fire engine with the municipality in the district was outside of the district, which further aggravated the scenario, according to locals.

Ram Baran Yadav visits Kanak Mani Dixit at Bir Hospital

Former President Ram Baran Yadav on Tuesday visited journalist Kanak Mani Dixit, who was undergoing treatment at the Bir Hospital under the detention of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority.

Dixit was detained by the anti-corruption constitutional watchdog on last Friday reportedly to probe into corruption allegations filed against him.

After he witnessed some health issues, Dixit was admitted at the Bir Hospital the next day.

The former President’s visit has been interpreted as a part of public support Dixit has been enjoying despite his detention over corruption charges.

It has been learned that the duo talked for around 20 minutes.

After the arrest, the Commission has been facing a backlash from various quarters of life and the media that the arrest was guided by the personal hostility between Dixit and the Commission chief Lokman Singh Karki.

Donated rice for Nepal earthquake victims to be

A senior United Nations official today claimed that World Food Programme never distributed damaged foods to earthquake victims in Nepal.

John Ging, Director of Coordination and Response Division, UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), dismissed media reports that WFP was supplying substandard and inedible food items as ‘nonsense’.

“I am surprised because some nonsense is being reported. WFP has never supplied damaged foods,” said Ging during a press conference at the UN House on Wednesday.

fire proof

Tinder-dry forests and grasslands. Homes and communities built on the fringe of rural frontiers. When the next natural inferno makes its move, can your rural homes survive a fiery flashover? Take some of these special precautions in the building process and give your homes a fighting chance.

When wildfire swept through Bob Heath's neighborhood in Napa, Calif., a lot of other homes in the fire's path burned to the ground. Why not his?

"I had Cultured Stone all over the outside," notes Heath, (incidentally a vice president of marketing for Cultured Stone, a cementitious siding company). "The fire flashed right over it but did no harm. It caused just a slight discoloration in some places."

Which is not to say that his home--or any home--is entirely fireproof. But new research and anecdotal evidence suggests that homes built with the right materials, the right landscaping, and smart detailing have a far better chance to be left standing after a flashover event.

Snake found in a bottle of cold drink Dew

Next time you swig a bottle of soft drink, especially the cola varieties, make sure you get just what you have paid for: nothing more, nothing less.

On Friday night, a consumer, found to his horror a dead lizard in a bottle of Coca Cola that he had just drunk. A small bottle of the drink, which he purchased at a local tea-stall near Five Lights in West Mambalam came with value addition. Just as K.T.Varghese, who was on a business visit from Kozhikode, Kerala, was about to finish the drink, he says he found a dead lizard, stuck to the bottom, inside the bottle. "I could not make out that the lizard was in the bottle, because it was the same colour as the drink," Mr.Varghese claimed.

Taken aback, he confronted the owner of the tea stall with the bottle, who told him the bottle had come sealed in a batch (manufacturing date: 10 June, 2003) that was delivered by his regular dealer. The tea-shop owner tried to contact the dealer, but could not reach him.

Following this, Mr.Varghese who retained the bottle containing the dead lizard, rushed to a nearby private hospital for treatment. He was given drugs to wash out the stomach, but the memory of having drunk from the bottle containing the dead lizard kept him queasy all of the next day too.

New Nepali short video: YO JAWANI KASTO BAIMANI

The air was thick, breathing was difficult. I walked faster with just one aim –to reach the point of summit before the lights went off or the sun went down. In both cases the seven storied building would plunge into darkness. I climbed the steps; the elevator was out of order. I had to get a glimpse of my love, my beloved. Throat went dry and the shortness of breath slowed my pace. I stood on top of the stair case. One more step and I would enter into that world of dream with my beloved.

There I was walking on the red and ripe leaves fallen around the trees. Slow heavy footsteps on the leaves dried and withered rustled under my feet. Some cracked and some stuck to my footwear. I enjoyed the air. It was clean and fresh and the recent snow on the pathway took on a dreamy haze.

The fragrance of nature spelt autumn. A ray of sun peeped through the foliage of thick trees and danced in the evening sky. I loved it and loved nature and my beloved waiting for me. A bird chirped and a leaf fell on my head and slid to my forehead. I brushed it aside with my index finger and the leaf floated in air for a moment and fell on the ground. Last autumn we were here in the same place, walking hand in hand talking of all the things under the sun.

On the streets, there are rumours. At shops, people murmur to each other that there is a plague of earthquakes going around the world.

Some are convinced that the quake is coming back to Nepal.

"None of the tailors are back," says the local seamstress, explaining that her staff have left the city.

"They're waiting for Baishakh 12," the Nepali date when the devastating quake shook Nepal last year.

The tremors might have stopped, but even after a year the fear has not left many of us.

The birth live film shoot of Shwetha Menon ended with a gentle k

The birth live film shoot of Shwetha Menon ended with a gentle kiss on the baby's forehead.

When you see Actress Shwetha Menon in pain during childbirth in her next film, don't be surprised if her performance seems unusually realistic. Thanks to Malayalam film director Blessy, who wanted to capture the birth live on camera, Menon was filmed by three cameras while giving birth in a suburban Mumbai Hospital.

Menon, an actor and former Miss-India second runner-up in 1994, delivered a girl child in the maternity ward of Nanavati Hospital in Mumbai in front of three cameras on Thursday 27-9-2012.

According to Times of India report, the director had planned the shoot with three cameras on Thursday. The shoot lasted for about 45 minutes and it ended with the actress planting a gentle kiss on the baby's forehead.
The pregnancy, delivery and the early years of motherhood are to be the crux of Blessy's upcoming movie Kalimannu. The shoot began when she was five months pregnant. In an age when pregnancy and motherhood is sometimes mechanical, the movie talks about a mother's relationship with her fetus.

During the shoot, there were 3 members from the film crew present in the room including cinemtographer Jiby Jacob, Shwetha's husband, Srivalsan Menon was also present during the delivery, which was a natural delivery.

The director and his team reportedly had to do prepare for a week to perfect shooting in the labour room. Both the mother and child were in good health, with the film crew reportedly taking all precautions to ensure they didn't get in the way.

Earthquake damaged Prasutigriha building demolish

An earthquake measuring 8.4 on the Richter scale devastated the Kathmandu Valley, killing an estimated 10,000 people and reducing most buildings to rubble.

Then a sparsely populated Valley, Kathmandu is now a bustling metropolis of 2.5 million people, according to the 2011 census. In places like Patan and Asan, houses stand shoulder-to-shoulder, ready to fall like dominoes.

Over 90 percent of buildings in the city are non-engineered, meaning they do not comply with building codes, estimates the National Society for Earthquake Technology, an NGO. When a big quake hits the city, experts estimate a fatality of 100,000 with over 300,000 injured. The damage will be colossal.

Nepal: one year after earthquake

It’s April again, the time when dry winds pick up and blow roofs away. As the winds twirl little circles of  dust and the sky crack-les with a flash of  lightening, the heart starts pounding. Not far away from here, someone’s home will be destroyed again.

How many times have they had to move in a year? How many times have they sat under their flimsy shelter and held on to the end of  their tarpaulin sheets, or run with buckets to catch the rain? And in this daily struggle to survive, how many times have they wished they too had died in the earthquake?

From the day the quake happened, I’ve been reporting on it for Al Jazeera English. From that moment, all the Nepali reporters I know rose to the challenge of  reporting the most momentous event in our lives--while after-shocks shook us. Disasters are times when the basic fabrics we so carefully stitch together in lives, fall apart. The memory of  the shock and the visions of  the dead, the endless broken houses and the expressions of  people have become indelible in each of  us.

Some Emotional nepali poem - issue of the day

If you ask me to name a country where the most practised form of verbal art is poetry, I would say Nepal. I say this with a penchant for poetry, because I believe poetry has stayed with us as part of our shared cultural and pragmatic consciousness longer than anything else.
Fond farewells
Bhanubhakta Acharya (1814-1866) used poetry to win a release from jail and land litigation. King Mahendra wrote a non-poem to bid farewell to then prime minister BP Koirala who had gone to meet him in his sawari camp before going on to his first prime ministerial visit to India after getting elected in 1958. The poem is banal but meaningful. It goes like this in my translation:

“BP, you’ll go now leaving us behind here/You’ll visit big cities, in the foreign land/You’ll have fun/But we will languish/In these very rivers, valleys,/the banyan-shaded platforms/And miss you/Don’t forget us/And we can never forget you either/Tired, when we will wipe sweats sitting on Chautari/At that moment/I will remember you.”
Mahendra never met Koirala again as predicted in the poem. Though Koirala’s party lingers in power with a coalition partner, that poetic episode leaves an important dent even today when parties visualise the future of this land on a chequered screen.

Veteran Nepal editor Kanak Mani Dixit is arrested by anti-graft body

Kanak Mani Dixit, a leading Nepalese journalist and civil rights activist, was Friday arrested by the country’s anti-graft commission.

Dixit, editor and publisher of news magazine Himal Southasian, was arrested from his residence in Patan in the afternoon by around 20 police personnel deployed by the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA).

Dixit, who is also the chairman of Sajha Yatayat, the public transportation bus system in Nepal which serves Kathmandu Valley, has been accused of misappropriating money by misusing his public post.

The anti-graft body has been probing his property details on suspicion of “amassing property disproportionate to his known source of income”.

Dixit, 60, had been ignoring summons by the constitutional anti-graft body and was “on the run”, according to the CIAA. The commission said he had refused to cooperate with the investigation.

Dixit, however, said it was an act of vendetta on the part of CIAA chief Lokman Singh Karki. The Federation of Nepalese Journalists (Himalmedia Chapter), too, called it “a deliberately vengeful act by the chairman”.

Mexico oil plant blast kills three, injures 58

A massive explosion at an oil facility in southeastern Mexico killed at least three workers, injured 58 and triggered evacuations, officials and state-run energy giant Pemex said.

A huge plume of toxic gray smoke could be seen spewing from the plant known as Pajaritos, in the city of Coatzacoalcos. The blast, which was felt from as far as 10 kilometers (six miles) away, forced the evacuation of nearby schools and businesses.

The cause of the explosion at the Petroquimica Mexicana de Vinilo (PMV) plant was not immediately known. The facility is jointly owned by Pemex.

Veracruz state governor Javier Duarte told Milenio Television that the blast killed three people at the plant. Another 58 people were hurt, according to Pemex.
