Customs agents in Biratnagar announced the strike charging police of confiscating goods even after paying duty and handing it over to Revenue Investigation Office, Itahari.
Earlier, they had halted works from 2 pm on Tuesday to Wednesday afternoon. They resorted to indefinite strike from today saying that their demands have not been addressed.
Police on Monday had impounded a truck for importing clothes ‘illegally’. Customs agents have claimed that duty of the consignment was paid. They have been demanding to release the goods.
Chairman of Association of Biratnagar Customs Agents, Bijendra Paswan said they opted for indefinite strike as the local administration paid no heed to their demands.
Officer, Rajendra Dhungana at the customs office said the work at the office has come to a complete halt due to the protest.
“Clearing of goods has been halted from 2 pm today,” he said, adding that it has affected revenue collection.
The office has been collecting around Rs 6 million in revenue every day.
