Feb 8, 2016- Gaurika Singh, 13-year old, won a historic individual medal for Nepal in swimming as the country’s search for gold in the 12th South Asian Games in India continued on Sunday.

On the second day of competition, Nepal claimed two silver medals—both in wushu—apart from one bronze each in swimming, table tennis, weightlifting and wrestling. Singh claimed a bronze in women’s 200m backstroke to bring Nepal’s first ever podium finish in individual event in Games’ 32-year history. Nepal had claimed a gold in the 1999 SAG in women’s 4x100m relay only due to the disqualification of India and Sri.

The Nepali men’s football team made a flying start to their campaign as Nawayug Shrestha’s hat-trick set them up for a 5-0 drubbing of Bhutan. The women’s team also registered their second consecutive victory after a 2-0 victory over Maldives.
