Feb 11, 2016- Nepal is taking on Namibia in a ‘winner takes it all’ seventh place playoff final of the ICC U-19 World Cup in Fatullah, Bangladesh on Thursday.
The match at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium will serve as a qualifier for the 2018 U-19 World Cup which will be held in New Zealand. The International Cricket Council had recently decided to hand current tournament’s top-ranked non-Test playing team a ticket to New Zealand.
Nepal, who lost to Pakistan by 122 runs in their fifth place playoff semi-final on Tuesday, had to wait for their 2018 fate with Namibia also in the fray. Namibia on Wednesday were inflicted a humiliating 203-run defeat by England in another playoff semi-final to set the clash with Nepal.
An unlikely victory would have sent Nepal into the fifth place playoff final and, most importantly, a place in the 2018 World Cup. Thursday’s game will be a match between two Associate teams whose journey had been similar.
While Nepal had stunned Test-giants New Zealand in league match to open up quarterfinal chances, Namibia had shocked defending champions South Africa on their way to making it into the last eight.
Nepal lost a thriller against Bangladesh in their quarter-finals while Namibia lost their last eight game to India.
Even Thursday’s loser can still get a chance to make it to next U-19 World Cup through regional tournaments or global qualifiers. While Namibia are the African champions among the continent’s non-Test playing teams, Nepal had qualified as the U-19 World Cup Qualifiers in Malaysia after finishing second in Asia.
