At least 30 people, including a child, were killed when the bus in which they were travelling fell into a gorge in Deogarh district of Odisha on Sunday. Eight people were injured in the accident, police said.
They said the bus carrying 38 passengers of Bharati Gananatya, a local jatra group, went off the hilly road and plunged into a 200-250 feet gorge at Tilebani Gayala ghat while it was on its way to Sohela in Bargarh district.
The accident occurred around 6.30 pm while the driver was trying to negotiate a steep curve, around 18 km from Deogarh town.
Deogarh Superintendent of Police Sara Sharma said rescue officials have so far recovered 25 bodies from the spot. “Those who survived suffered multiple fractures and may have to be referred to VSS Medical College in Burla. The condition of at least seven passengers is very critical,” said Sharma. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced free treatment for the injured.
Most of the victims belonged to Sonepur and Bargarh districts. The jatra group had performed in a Deogarh village on Saturday night.
Sources said rescue work was hampered due to rough terrain and poor visibility. CRPF and Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force personnel have been deployed along with fire brigade officials to carry out the rescue work. Generators were pressed into service to facilitate rescue operations in the dark, while senior police and administrative officials have also rushed to the spot to supervise the operations, SP Sharma said.
