Police made public one accused of murdering an Italian citizen 21 years ago amid a press conference in the capital on Sunday.

A team from the Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police, acting on a tip off, had nabbed Tashi Gurung from Kathmandu on Friday. Gurung is said to be the mastermind of the murder of Italian national David Carraro at a hotel in Thame two decades ago.
Police investigation shows that a gang of people led by Gurung thrashed Carraro, then 21, and stabbed him over a dispute at Reggae pub in Thamel, Kathmandu on October 13, 1995 at around 10:30 pm.
The dispute erupted after the gang harassed Carraro's two Italian friends at the pub, leading to Carraro's murder, police said.
Carraro was rushed to Bir Hospital where he was declared dead. Gurung had been absconding since then.

Senior Superintendent of Police Manoj Neupane said that the investigation showed around two years after the incident, Gurung went to the United States through an illegal channel (by using the passport of another man called Sandup Ghale of Sama in Gorkha). Gurung's father purchased him the passport for Rs 450,000.

Gurung spent around 15 years in the US and also holds US green card, the investigation found.

Neupane said that he returned to Nepal around four years ago. A permanent resident of Manang, Gurung was living in Nayabazaar, Kathmandu.

Police also confiscated a vehicle license issued under the name of Sandup Ghale from Gurung.

The license carried by Gurung is issued under the name of Chaumaya Limbu from Amaradaha in Morang, police said.
Four others involved in the murder were already arrested, police said, adding that other eight suspects are still at large.

Police said that investigations into the murder were underway.RSS
